Our second day exploring Lake Como took us through an unexpected detour to Porlezza, Como and through charming lakeside villages in search of a baby carriage after ours was lost at the airport. What was supposed to be a relaxing day around Lake Como quickly turned into an adventure, proving that family travel doesn’t always go according to plan—but it can still be memorable.
We woke up early in the morning. It was a Saturday. The weather forecast was promising, sunny and warm weather. We were starting our vacation searching for a baby carriage, and therefore changing all our vacation plans and itineraries. We were advised to go the the nearest city a little bigger than Menaggio – Porelzza.
From Lake Como to Lake Lugano. Porlezza
Porlezza is a small, picturesque town in northern Italy, located on the eastern shore of Lake Lugano, near the Swiss border. It’s known for its relaxed atmosphere, scenic mountain views, and charming lakeside promenade.

Historically, Porlezza was an important trading point between Italy and Switzerland, and today it attracts visitors looking for a quieter alternative to the more crowded Lake Como destinations.
We parked the car in the parking lot near the tunnel.

And we first crossed the street to the lakeshore to admire the views.

Breakfast in Porlezza
We stopped for coffee and breakfast at Bar Italia Pasticceria Gelateria pastry shop. Bar Italia Pasticceria Gelateria in Porlezza, Lombardy, Italy — a well-known local café, pastry shop, and gelateria on the lakeside. It is a classic Italian bar-style café, pasticceria (pastry shop), and gelateria (ice cream shop) located at Via Giuseppe Garibaldi 1, facing the beautiful lake in Porlezza. It’s a popular stop for both locals and visitors exploring the town or strolling along the waterfront.

They were serving great espresso, cappuccino, and other bar drinks, paired with freshly baked pastries and brioche. Also there was a wide selection of Italian pastries, cornetti, pasticcini, and cakes. Moreover, they were serving artisanal gelato with classic flavours.

There was both indoor seating and outdoor tables with scenic views of the lake — perfect for relaxing in good weather. But as it was a little cold early in the morning at 8 am, we preferred to stay indoors.

We spent half an hour there and then went for a quick visit through the old town.

Porlezza Town Center
The town center of Porlezza is compact, laid-back, and very walkable—more about atmosphere than big attractions.

Ergonomic Baby Carrier
Exploring the city center with a little one? An ergonomic baby carrier can make walking around and sightseeing much easier.

It revolves around the lakeside area and a few narrow streets just behind it. Just a short walk inland, streets become quieter and more traditional, with small shops, bakeries, and everyday local businesses.

Out of Bar Italia Pasticceria Gelateria we turned left and went on Via Giuseppe Garibaldi.

At the first intersection we reached Piazza Cinque vie. Then we continued to the right on Via Giuseppe Garibaldi and then turned right on Via Guglielmo delle Porta and got to a bigger square, Piazza Giovanni Paolo II where we found Chiesa di S. Vittore.

What to Pack for Your Trip: Lightweight Hiking Backpack
Exploring the lakeside or nearby trails? A lightweight hiking backpack is a handy travel essential for carrying everything you need.
Then we got back to Stada Statale 340 with its Lungolago, the promenade along Lake Lugano.

Architecturally, the center is simple and authentic rather than grand—pastel buildings, shutters, and a few historic churches like Chiesa di San Vittore add character.
Porlezza Lungolago
But at the heart of Porlezza is the pleasant promenade along Lake Lugano, where you’ll find cafés, gelaterias, and small restaurants with outdoor seating, such as: Bar Pizzeria Visconti or B-Loved LoungeCafè.

Shopping Near Porlezza
We didn’t find a baby carriage at the stores in Porlezza. We also stopped at the 2 supermarkets located just outside Porlezza on the way back to Menaggio: Iperal Carlazzo and Carrefour Market – Supermarket. But we bought the essentials: fruits, breakfast supplies, baby diapers, some baby food, baby cereals, milk, snacks, some baby toys and pacifiers, baby wet wipes, napkins, water suitable for the baby. But we didn’t find a baby carriage, so we had to change our plans again and go to Como.
We found out there was a store in Como city center selling baby carriages and other baby stuff, Prénatal. It was closing at 1 pm and then opened again between 3 and 7 pm. So we didn’t have to hurry.
As the accommodation was on our way to Como, we first stopped to put the groceries in the fridge and left the other stuff we bought.
The Journey from Porlezza to Como
Driving from Porlezza to Como is a short yet wonderfully scenic journey that gently traces the edge of Lake Como. The distance is only about 40 kilometers (25 miles), and under normal conditions it takes around an hour, though in the height of summer the trip can stretch longer as traffic builds along the narrow lakeside roads. And moreover, the baby on board may require more stops, at least one stop during the whole journey.

We didn’t have to stop, because the baby fell asleep and so we didn’t want to wake her up. Therefore we took advantage and hurried to Como.

Leaving Porlezza the drive begins quietly as you follow the SS340, also known as the Strada Statale Regina. Then, from Menaggio the drive becomes truly memorable. The road hugs the western shoreline of the lake, revealing continuous views of shimmering water framed by steep, green mountains. At times, the road narrows and winds tightly through small villages, requiring careful attention but rewarding you with ever-changing scenery.
Along the way, we passed through charming lakeside towns such as Menaggio and Tremezzo. There pastel buildings, waterfront cafés, and quiet promenades invite you to slow down and take in the atmosphere. These stretches are often the highlight of the drive, offering postcard-perfect views at nearly every turn. We also passed through Brienno and then Argegno.

As we continued toward Como, the road remained beautiful but become busier. Some sections are tight with sharp bends, so driving carefully is essential.
Como
We drove on SS340 and then on Via Per Cernobbio. We approached Como driving along Lake Como shore and then on Via Borgo Vico.

Parking in the City Center
Once we arrived in Como center, we headed to a parking lot located just outside the walls of the old city, a few steps away from the Duomo. We turned left on Viale Fratelli Rosselli. Then we continued on Viale Innocenzo VI and turned left on Via Lucini. We continued ahead on Viale Carlo Cattaneo. We passed by the old town gate, Porta Torre and parked on Viale Lecco.
Walking in the Town Center
Out of the car we crossed the street and the tram line and went north on Via Virginio Bertinelli. We arrived by the Teatro Sociale building and entered the old town passing by the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta – Duomo di Como. We arrived in Piazza del Duomo. From there we went a little to the right to Piazza Guido Grimoldi where we found the Prénatal baby store.
We bought a baby carriage and then we started searching for a place to have lunch and feed the baby.

Lakeside Views Lunch in Como
We stopped at the Touring Cafè Restaurant in Piazza Cavour, one of the main squares by the lake. There we got a lively atmosphere with Como lakeside views.

Touring Cafè Restaurant is a classic Italian café-bar with outdoor seating, perfect for people-watching. Offers a mix of Italian classics: pasta, pizza, sandwiches, salads. Prices are mid-range for the area (€10–20 per person).
We wanted to enjoy the nice outdoor seating in a historic square. We ordered pasta and refreshments. And we fed the baby with a jar of baby food we bought earlier from the supermarket in Porlezza. It was easier to feed her while standing in her carriage with the belts fastened.
Como Lakeside and Old Town Visit
After lunch we took a stroll through Piazza Cavour admiring the Como lakeside views.

What to Pack for Your Trip:Insulated Water Bottle
Packing the right travel essentials can make your trip much more comfortable.Exploring Lake Como? An insulated water bottle is a simple travel essential to keep your drink cool while you’re out sightseeing.

Then we walked down the pedestrian streets passing by the Duomo. At the heart of the center stands the impressive Como Cathedral. It is a stunning landmark with intricate architecture that immediately catches your attention. Nearby squares are often bustling with people enjoying coffee or simply soaking in the atmosphere, especially in the afternoon and early evening.

Como Walking Tours
Exploring Como? A walking tour is a great way to discover the city center and see its highlights.

The old town of Como has a charming, relaxed atmosphere that makes it perfect for wandering on foot. The historic city center is filled with narrow cobblestone streets, elegant squares, and beautifully preserved buildings that reflect its long history.

As we walked through the maze of streets, we came across small boutiques, cafés, and gelato shops. These all added to the lively yet laid-back feel of the town.

Anti-Theft Crossbody Bag
Exploring Como or Lake Como villages? An anti-theft crossbody bag is a practical way to keep your essentials secure while sightseeing.
Nesso
We took the car and headed to Nesso, folowing the GPS instructions.
The drive from Como to Nesso was a short but unforgettable journey along the edge of Lake Como. As the road winded gently along the shoreline, we got constant glimpses of the shimmering water framed by steep, green hills and elegant villas tucked into the landscape. Around every bend, the scenery seemed to shift. One moment we were passing quiet lakeside villages, the next we were looking out over wide, open stretches of the lake with mountains rising in the distance.
Then the road became narrower and more sinuous, giving the trip a slightly adventurous feel. Small stone houses and colorful facades appeared close to the roadside. The charm of the area became more intimate as we were approaching Nesso. It was the kind of drive where you want to slow down, not just for the curves, but to take in the beauty all around.
However, arriving in Nesso on a Saturday afternoon, and especially around 3 pm was a bit challenging. Parking was very limited, and we didn’t manage to get a spot. In the weekends the few existing parking spots tend to fill up quickly. Visitors are drawn by this Lake Como village , by it’s famous waterfall and picturesque setting.
We never had in mind to go to Nesso on a Saturday nor Sunday. But, given the need to find a baby carriage in Como, we said we can try to visit Nesso then. But we weren’t lucky to find a parking lot and the baby was crying. So we decided to head back to the accommodation. At least we got to experience the spectacular drive and lake side views to Nesso and back to Como.
The Journey Back Along Lake Como Western Branch
The drive from Como back toward Menaggio is a beautiful journey. Following the western shore of Lake Como, the route offers continuous, postcard-like views—deep blue water stretching out and mountains rising steeply on the opposite side. The road winds through a series of small lakeside villages, each with its own quiet charm, making the drive feel both scenic and intimate.
Lake Como Views at Laglio
We stopped for a few minutes at Laglio as the baby was crying. She stopped crying when my husband held her in his arms while sitting on the stone wall.
She was wearing a cute yellow dress and a white sun hat fitting in the peaceful outdoor vibe. Behind them we could admire beautiful Lake Como with a sailboat floating on the water, surrounded by lush green hills and trees.

Follow Lake Como Back to the Accommodation
Continuing along the lakeside, the road passed through the quiet villages of Brienno and Argegno, each clinging closely to the edge of the lake. The scenery remained consistently beautiful, but the drive demanded more attention —the road narrowed, curves tightened, and at times it felt as though the buildings ware almost brushing against the car. Passing through these villages gave us a real sense of how life was woven into the landscape, with balconies, cafés, and tiny harbors appearing just a few steps from the road.
As we reached Colonno, where the Greenway of Lake Como begun, the drive became even more delicate. The streets growed very narrow, and we had to proceed slowly and carefully, often yielding to oncoming cars in tight spaces. It was a section where patience was essential, and a crying baby was not helping either.
Further along, approaching Lenno, the pace slowed dramatically. Being a Saturday afternoon—around peak time—and with the Festa di San Giovanni taking place, the roads became congested and a traffic jam formed. Cars lined up along the narrow stretch, and progress becomes stop-and-go. While it was frustrating, the lively atmosphere, with visitors gathering for the festivities, added a sense of occasion to the journey and reminded us just how popular and vibrant this part of Lake Como can be.
Sagra di San Giovanni Celebration on Lake Como
The Festa di San Giovanni, held in Lenno and on Isola Comacina, is the oldest and most famous celebration on Lake Como. It combines tradition, history, and spectacle, commemorating the destruction of the island in 1169.
Usually the event begins in the evening with local food stalls, music, and dancing, creating a lively and festive atmosphere. One of the most moving moments is the “Zoca de L’Oli,” when thousands of small illuminated candles are set afloat on the water, forming a glowing tribute in the bay.
Later in the night, the highlight of the festival takes place: a dramatic historical reenactment accompanied by a large musical fireworks display over the lake, symbolically recreating the island’s destruction. Both locals and visitors gather along the shores, dine by the water, or watch from boats to fully enjoy the experience.
As it was around 5 pm people were already gathering for the festa in the Tremezzina area. There were lots of people walking along the narrow Via Regina and, of course, lots of cars that caused a traffic jam on the narrow streets of the tiny villages on the Greenway of Lake Como.
After we passed Lenno, the road became wider and less congested We followed the lakeside road toward north, with mountains on one side and wide views of Lake Como on the other. We drove through the elegant villages of Tremezzo and Griante before arriving in the lively waterfront town of Menaggio.
Menaggio
We went straight to the accommodation. We rested for a short time, changed clothes and refreseshed we walked to the town center to have lunch, as we were starving.
Dinner in Menaggio
We spent a beautiful evening in Menaggio historic center, enjoying dinner in the lively town square Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, surrounded by charming Italian buildings and cozy cafés.

We watched the sunset atmosphere while our little one explored the streets, played on the cobblestones, and danced happily around the plaza.

Menaggio City Center Stroll, Lake Como Promenade
After dinner we strolled through the city center, admiring the narrow streets, colorful architecture, and peaceful lakeside views.
We strolled on Via Calvi and took a look at the small boutiques and shops selling local products and other stuff. We passed by the Church of Santa Marta and then we reached St. Stephen’s Church, Parrocchia Santo Stefano.

Then we crossed back to Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi and reached Largo Cavour and the lakeshore promenade.

Lightweight Travel Stroller
Traveling around Como with a baby? A lightweight travel stroller makes exploring the city and getting around much easier.

We walked along the lakeshore on Via Giuseppe Mazzini, at the intersection we went left on Via IV Novembre and then we turned right on Via Como then climbed the stairs on the left and reached Via L. Cadorna and went to the left.
Back to the Accommodation
We enjoyed these quiet family moments — from relaxing by the lake to walking back to our accommodation through the scenic hillside roads.

Lake Como Views from Il Balcone di Elma, Menaggio
We ended the day at Il Balcone di Elma taking in the breathtaking panorama of Lake Como and the mountains.
We took some pictures just in front of the gate to our accomodation.

From up there we could see Grand Hotel Menaggio on the lakeshore and the beautiful gardens nearby.

We crossed the yard to get to our apartment that was just around the corner, eager to get a good night rest.

Plan Your Lake Como & Lugano Family Road Trip
Planning a Lake Como road trip with a baby? After spending six days exploring Menaggio, Como, Porlezza, Lugano, Bellagio, Varenna, Tremezzo and Argegno by car, we discovered that the right accommodation, car, baby gear and travel planning can make a big difference. Here are some of the travel resources and practical essentials we recommend for planning your own family adventure.

Find Accommodation Around Lake Como
We chose Menaggio as our base because it gave us easy access to the ferry terminal, lakeside promenade, restaurants, shops and many of the places we wanted to visit. Staying in one location also made travelling with a baby much easier.
Whether you prefer an apartment with a kitchen, a family-friendly hotel or a lakeside stay, compare accommodation around Lake Como before your trip.

Rent a Car for Your Lake Como Road Trip
Renting a car at Milan Malpensa gave us the freedom to travel at our own pace, stop whenever our baby needed a break and explore places that are harder to reach by public transport.
Our route included Menaggio, Como, Porlezza, Lugano, Tremezzo, Bellagio, Varenna and Argegno. A rental car was especially useful for our airport transfers and for exploring the western shore of Lake Como.

Explore Lake Como by Ferry or Boat
Some of our favorite moments were on the water. We took ferries from Menaggio to Bellagio and Varenna and enjoyed beautiful views of the lake, mountains and lakeside villages along the way.
For a special experience, you can also choose from private boat trips, scenic cruises and guided Lake Como excursions.

Book Lake Como Experiences
Lake Como is much more than beautiful views. During our trip we explored Bellagio, Varenna, Tremezzo and Como, visited Villa Carlotta and Villa Melzi, walked the lakeside promenades and also took a day trip to Lugano, Switzerland.
If you want to add organized experiences to your itinerary, browse Lake Como tours, sightseeing trips and private excursions.
Lake Como Road Trip Travel Essentials
Travelling around Lake Como with a baby taught us to keep the essentials close at hand. From organizing luggage and stroller supplies to making long car journeys more comfortable, these practical travel products can be useful for a family road trip around Italy.

Digital Luggage Scale
A digital luggage scale is a handy travel essential for checking your suitcase weight before heading home. It is especially useful after shopping in Italy and helps you avoid unexpected excess baggage fees at the airport.

Packing Cubes
Packing cubes are perfect for keeping clothes, baby outfits and travel essentials organized during a road trip. They make it easier to find what you need without unpacking your entire suitcase at every stop.

Portable Stroller Organizer
A stroller organizer keeps baby essentials such as bottles, wipes, snacks and small toys within easy reach while exploring Lake Como’s villages, cafés, promenades and scenic spots.

Portable Baby Changing Mat
A portable baby changing mat is a practical essential when travelling by car with a baby. Keep it handy for quick changes during scenic stops, shopping breaks or whenever you need a clean and comfortable place for your little one.

Car Window Sun Shade
Sunny drives around Lake Como can be beautiful, but direct sunlight through the rear windows can be uncomfortable for a baby. A car window sun shade can help reduce glare and direct sunlight during daytime drives.

Car Phone Mount
A secure phone mount is useful when using your phone for navigation. Keep your route visible while driving between Lake Como’s villages, ferry terminals, parking areas and scenic stops.

Portable Power Bank
A portable power bank is one of those small travel essentials that can save the day when you’re using your phone for navigation, taking photos or checking ferry schedules. Keep one in your day bag so you can recharge your phone while exploring Lake Como, Bellagio, Varenna or Lugano.

Kids Travel Tray
For older babies and toddlers who are developmentally ready, a travel tray can provide a convenient surface for snacks, books, drawing and small activities during longer car journeys. Choose one that is appropriate for your child’s age and car-seat setup.
Family road-trip tip: Always follow your child’s car-seat manufacturer’s instructions and make sure accessories do not interfere with the correct installation or operation of the car seat. Choose travel accessories appropriate for your child’s age and use them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
