Our Metropolitan City of Naples, Amalfi Coast, Capri and Pompeii Italy Visit: Day 4

Morning Ferry Journey From Naples to Capri Island, Italy

We left the hotel early in the morning after a quick breakfast. Then we headed to Piazza Garibaldi. We took the metro line 1 for 3 stops and got off at Municipio. We then crossed the street to Naples (Molo Immacolatella Vecchia) and boarded a ferry to Capri. A trip from Naples to Capri Island is a must when in Italy, for highlights such as: the Piazzetta, Marina Piccola beach, Via Krupp, Faraglioni views and Villa San Michele!! The trip takes around an hour and prices range now between 20 – 30 euros per person, but back in 2017 we paid around 70 euros for return tickets for both of us.

Arriving at Marina Grande in Capri Island, Italy

We finally arrived at Marina Grande and first we hurried to the funicular. We thought of visiting Marina Grande before boarding the ferry back to Naples.

Marina Grande, Metropolitan City of Naples Italy is the main port of the island of Capri. It is located on the northern coast. It is thus the entry point for many visitors. They arrive by ferry or hydrofoil from Naples, but also from Sorrento, or the Amalfi Coast. As the island’s largest harbor, Marina Grande welcomes ferries, boats, and also yachts. From here, visitors can easily access transportation options like taxis, buses, and the funicular to Capri town.

The largest beach in Capri, Italy – Marina Grande is a mix of sand and pebbles. It offers stunning views of the sea. Boats are docked in the harbor. It’s one of the few accessible beaches on the island of Capri, Italy. The area around the harbor features pastel-colored buildings, cafes, seafood restaurants, and also small shops. It’s a bustling spot, also ideal for a quick snack or a leisurely meal.

Transportation and Cars on the Island of Capri, Italy

On the island of Capri, Italy cars are generally limited. Regulations are in place due to the island’s small size. The narrow roads and high tourist foot traffic also contribute to these restrictions. For most visitors, driving on the island is not a choice. The local government limits non-resident vehicles, particularly during the tourist season (from spring to fall). The aim is to reduce congestion. It also helps protect the island’s environment. Therefore, only local residents and certain service vehicles can drive.

Capri’s restricted car usage also contributes to its charm, as the island remains peaceful and relatively unspoiled by heavy traffic. However, the cars that do work on the island are usually small. They include mini-vans, taxis, or electric cars. Therefore these vehicles navigate the narrow, winding roads more easily. Also, these vehicles often shuttle tourists between Capri town, Anacapri, and other key spots on the island. Moreover, Capri is famous for its open-top taxis, which are unique to the island. They are typically stylish, convertible cars that can carry several passengers, allowing for scenic rides through the island.

Access to private vehicles is limited. As a result, most transportation is done through the efficient public bus system of Capri island. People also use the funicular railway or travel on foot. Many visitors explore the island on foot, but others rent scooters for a more independent exploration. This is especially common in less crowded areas.

Taking the Funicular to Capri Town

The funicular railway connects Marina Grande to the town of Capri. It offers a quick and scenic ride uphill to the famous Piazzetta. The funicular costed us 1 euros per person in 2017, but now it costs 2.4 euros one way per person.

The trip lasted 10 minutes and we finally arrived in the famous Piazzetta.

Both locals and visitors gather there to enjoy coffee. They people-watch and soak in the island’s unique atmosphere. The area is small, yet it’s a hub of activity, particularly during the tourist season. From the Piazzetta, head southwest and follow the signs pointing towards Marina Piccola. The walk usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Bus Ride from Capri Town to Anacapri

We got back to Via Roma to take the orange bus to Anacapri. The orange buses headed to Anacapri leave from a bus terminal near Via Roma, a short walk from the Piazetta. Look for the bus stop that indicates “Anacapri.” The bus takes a scenic and winding route up the hillsides of the island. The road is known as the Via Provinciale Anacapri. It is narrow. At times, you will experience incredible views of the coastline and the sea below. The journey takes approximately 15 – 20 minutes, depending on traffic. The bus ride can be crowded during peak tourist seasons, so prepare for standing room only at times. We were lucky to find seats for both of us.

Bus ride from Capri to Anacapri
Bus ride from Capri to Anacapri

The bus drops you off at Piazza Vittoria in Anacapri, the central square and main bus stop of the town. From there, you’re within walking distance of Anacapri’s attractions. These include the chairlift to Monte Solaro. You can also visit Villa San Michele and explore charming local shops and cafes. Overall, this is the most convenient and also affordable method for traveling from Capri town to Anacapri. Moreover, it offers stunning views along the way.

Taxis in Capri

A nicer choice to get to Anacapri would be the taxis. Taxis in Capri are famously unique and an attraction themselves. Most taxis in Capri are open-top convertibles. They are often stretched Fiat Ducatos or similar vans. These vehicles have had their roofs cut off and replaced with a canvas sunshade. Painted in bright, Mediterranean colors (often white, cream, or pastel), Capri taxis match the island’s chic, luxurious vibe. They’re part of the island’s charm — you’ll often see tourists snapping photos with them. But Capri taxis aren’t cheap, so expect to pay €20–€30 for short trips. The cost is higher if you’re going between Capri town and Anacapri or to more remote areas.

Anacapri – A Peaceful Escape on the Island

Anacapri is a picturesque town on the island of Capri. It is located on the slopes of Mount Solaro, the highest point on the island. Unlike the more bustling town of Capri, Anacapri offers a quieter and laid-back atmosphere. It is known for its charming streets. Anacapri also boasts beautiful views and an authentic local culture. Visitors can take a chairlift from Anacapri to the summit of Mount Solaro. There, they are rewarded with panoramic views of the island and the surrounding sea. On clear days, you can even see the Bay of Naples.

The Church of San Michele Arcangelo dates from the 18th century. It is known for its majolica-tiled floor depicting the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden. It is a gem of Anacapri. And the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), although not technically in Anacapri, the famous cave is accessed from this area. Visitors can take a boat into the cave to experience the ethereal blue light that filters through the underwater entrance.

Anacapri is also known for its artisan shops, selling local products like hand-made sandals, ceramics, and also perfumes. The town’s narrow streets are perfect for strolling, with picturesque alleys and vibrant gardens adding to its charm.

From the bus stop we wandered around and checked out the artisan shops. We crossed the street and headed towards west on Via Giuseppe Orlandi. We saw pottery stores, clothes shops and handicraft  shoe stores selling traditional Capri sandals.

Scala Fenicia – The Ancient Phoenician Steps

Then we got back to the intersection and went to the east. Back to Piazza Vittoria we climbed the stairs and went left on Via Capodimonte. Then we continued ahead on Via Axel Munthe and we got to Scala Fenicia and the entrance to Villa San Michele.

The Scala Fenicia, or Phoenician Steps, is a historic stone stairway on the island of Capri. It connects the towns of Capri and Anacapri. The staircase climbs steeply from the port of Marina Grande up to Anacapri. It covers approximately 921 steps carved into the rock of the island’s cliffs.

The steps are named “Phoenician.” Yet, it is now believed that Greek settlers built them in the 7th or 6th century BC. Despite this, the Phoenician name has persisted over time. Before the construction of modern roads, the Scala Fenicia was the only direct route between the two towns. Locals used it for centuries to transport goods. It was also the main pathway to move between Capri and Anacapri.

Today, the Scala Fenicia is a popular attraction for visitors. Most people use roads or chairlifts to reach Anacapri. Yet, many choose to ascend or descend the ancient steps. They do it for the experience and the stunning views.
